Family Messenger December 8, 2009

God of hope,
May we, like Mary,
do our part in your saving work.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

A Message from the Principal

Today we celebrate the great solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. People all over the world go to church today to worship God for giving us Mary, who was pure, holy, and worthy of becoming the mother of Jesus Christ. When Mary was still inside her own mother’s body, she was chosen to be different from all other people. God gave Mary the special grace to be completely pure—free from any stain of original sin. Mary is the patroness of the United States, and so this day is particularly wonderful for all of us here.

As we continue through the season of Advent, we ask God to give us strength to prepare the way for Jesus’ coming.

Blessings,
Ms. Olivia Carrillo

Family Messenger, December 1, 2009

God of power and love,
We thank you for the grace of this Advent season.
Help us each day to remember your greatness
and your love for us, so that we, like your Son,
will serve you with reverence.
Amen.

A Message from the Principal

On Sunday, we began the season of Advent. Advent is a time of quiet, joyful preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ birth and also a time to remember that we wait for Christ to come again in glory. It is a season to enjoy the hope that Christ’s resurrection points to. This is a time of anticipation and new beginnings! At home, you can create a mode of anticipation with your family by displaying the empty manger from a Christmas nativity scene; you can also set an advent wreath at home and light it each week as we approach Christmas. May this season of Advent fill your family with joy!

Barnes and Noble Book Fair

It’s December and time for the Barnes & Noble book fair at the Americana on Saturday, December 5th! The library earns 10% on any purchases made at Barnes & Noble during its store hours of 9:00 am to 11:00 pm. Just mention our voucher number 598680 when you check out. All purchases earn our school a profit. Buy a book, CD, DVD, coffee, food, games, etc. anytime on Saturday during store hours. The Americana is offering an additional 5% to our school. Just take your Barnes and Noble receipts to the concierge desk on Saturday before you leave.

We are planning a fun, holiday program Saturday morning starting at 9:30 am. There will be Christmas carols, Story Time, a Puppet Show and a new holiday tradition, the Kris Kringle book exchange. For the book exchange, guests will fill out a sticky label with the following information: Child’s name, Grade, Reading Level, Topic/Book interest). The label goes into a box. Guests will choose a label that has already been filled out by another child. They will then purchase a book from Barnes & Noble for the child they picked and stick the label on it. The purchased books will go into a basket. These books will be distributed by calling out the names on the label later in the morning. If the child is not present, the books will be distributed at school.

Can’t shop on Saturday in Glendale? Just pick up the phone, dial 818-545-9146, and place a phone order, mention our voucher number 598680 and our school earns 10%. Any purchases, in person or by phone made on Saturday, December 5th giving our voucher number will be included in our 10% profit. This means that out of area grandparents and family can phone in a book order on Dec. 5th and Barnes & Noble will ship it FREE!

Come and share in the fun. See you there!

Mrs. Hihn
