Family Messenger October 27, 2009

Eternal God,
We give you thanks for your saints.
May we learn from their example
and praise you through our words and actions.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

A Message from the Principal
With Halloween just days away, there is much excitement in the air! The students are excited about the costume parade and parties on this fun-filled day. It is important to remember, however, that Halloween is part of the celebration of a Catholic feast day. Halloween, or All Hallows Even, is the eve of All Saints which is celebrated on November 1. On the Solemnity of All Saints, we celebrate all saints in heaven who pray for us and encourage us through their lives.

On Tuesday, November 3rd at 8:30 a.m., Mrs. Lomasto and the third grade class will lead the All School Mass in celebration of All Saints Day. Each student will be dressed as a saint and will briefly present some information about that saint. You are invited to join us for this special Mass.

Sincerely,
Ms. Olivia Carrillo

Halloween

Parents and guests are invited to our annual Halloween Parade which will be held on Friday, October 30 at 12:45 p.m. Class parties to follow. On this day, students may come to school dressed in costume, provided that the costume meets the guidelines distributed last week. Any student who is inappropriately dressed (as determined by school personnel) will be asked to change. It is recommended that students bring their uniforms to school on this day in case they are required to change out of their costume.

Dear God,

A Message from the Principal
Yesterday, Incarnation’s faculty and staff joined other Catholic elementary schools in the San Fernando Region for an all day workshop at Bishop Alemany High School. The workshop was presented by Dr. Debra Pickering and was titled “Effective Teaching and Effective Learning.” It was a great workshop with lots of opportunity for collegial conversations about student learning. These professional development days help us return to the classroom with validation of what we do and with new ideas and food for thought for improving our practices.

Autumn weather is now here, and with that comes the start of the cold and flu season. To help prevent the spread of colds and flu, please keep your child home if he/she exhibits any of the following symptoms: cough, stuffy nose, sore throat, fever, vomiting. If your child does display any of these symptoms while at school, his/her teacher may request that your child is sent home. Please remember that if your child does have a fever, he/she needs to be fever-free (without the use of a fever reducer) for 24 hours BEFORE they can return to school. Thank you for your cooperation.

May your week be blessed!

Ms. Olivia Carrillo

Family Messenger, October 6, 2009

God of wisdom,
You continue to speak to us. Teach us to listen to your voice.
Free us from the many distractions that make it hard for us to hear you.
Help us to recognize the sound of your voice.
Amen.

A Message from the Principal
ITBS testing and make-up testing continue this week. We anticipate receiving score reports in time for parent-teacher conferences next month.

With October now in swing, many of the students are excited about Halloween. With this excitement approaching it is sometimes difficult to stop and take time to think and pray for others in need. Recently, people of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Samoa were affected by natural disasters. Please take time to pray with your children for all those in need and give thanks for all that we are blessed with.

This month, we celebrate Our Lady of the Rosary. When we pick up a rosary, it is as if Mary holds us by the hand and takes us to the throne of her Son in heaven, where we can see, through her eyes, his amazing light. Consider taking some time to pray the rosary as a family!

May your week be blessed!

Ms. Olivia Carrillo

Library News from Mrs. Hihn
Thank you to everyone who supported the Scholastic Book Fair! Scholastic allows us to split our profit into books and cash. The library was able to buy 65 new books from the fair and we have $1,011.06 in cash to spend on library bound books from other vendors!

Our next book fair will be at Barnes and Noble at the Americana on Saturday, December 5, 2009. Our school earns 20% of all sales on that day with Incarnation vouchers, which we will provide. So, please keep this date in mind when you are shopping for Christmas gifts. We can also use our Barnes and Noble scrip for all purchases, so the school earns money on the scrip and store sales too.

Finally, the library welcomes donations of all gently used books for our book collection, so when you are cleaning out your bookshelves, please make a box for Incarnation and drop it off at the office.

A Message from the Principal

Today, students in grades 1-8 began taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). Testing will continue all this week through the beginning of next week. In order for your child(ren) to receive a complete score report, please make sure that he/she is present and on time. All testing will take place before lunch. Score reports should be available at parent-teacher conferences in November.

This Friday is our annual Blessing of the Animals. The blessing will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will take place in the kindergarten yard. Parents are invited to bring animals directly to the kindergarten yard beginning at 12:45. To minimize distractions during instruction, live animals (regardless of size) will not be allowed in the classrooms. Please make sure that you bring plastic bags to clean up after your pets! If you are unable to bring your animal to school for the blessing, students are encouraged to bring a photo of their pet. After the blessing, students/families with animals will proceed to the carpool area first, followed by all other students. Please be flexible with carpool on this day—it may be necessary for everyone to park and pick up their children.

Thank you and have a great week.
